When you're young and you see that one of the top point scorers in the NBA is from the state you live in it's more than a little thrilling. That was the case when I was in elementary school and Michael Adams was pouring in the points for the Washington Bullets. Adams was born in Hartford so he was idolized just based on that factor.Later, in the mid 90s Marcus Camby (also from Hartford) was leading the UMass basketball team to a great record and national prominence. UMass had a lot of solid players but there was no doubt Camby was the their main guy.Camby?entered the excellent NBA Draft of 1996 where players like Allen Iverson and Ray Allen along with many other well-known stars were picked.?He has lasted in the league as long as those guys. That proves his durability (which was questioned throughout his career) and he has also put up solid numbers. In fact, his rebound and block totals have far surpassed what was expected of him.At about the same time that Camby was dominating the college game, Charles Smith (from Bridgeport)?was playing for those physical New York Knicks teams along with the likes of Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason. Patrick Ewing was the star and the team had a lot of talent everywhere. By that time, Smith was more a role player with the brutish forwards taking a bigger level of responsibility in the team's success. However, he still contributed at that time and had already showcased his talents earlier in his pro career.AdvertisementThose physical Knicks teams would have loved to have Rick Mahorn (from Hartford) taking the court with them. He was known to be very physical and intimidating. He fit perfectly on the physical Detroit Pistons?teams of the 80s. With the Pistons he won a championship. Mahorn wasn't known as the greatest offensive threat around but he made up for it with physicality and he produced solid stats. The most impressive stat that Calvin Murphy (from Norwalk)?has may not be basketball related at all. Murphy reportedly has 14 kids by 9 different women. His numbers on the basketball court also make a pretty good impression. He showed that he could score on the court as well by putting up a lot of points year in and year out.Chris Dudley (from Stamford) was different than Murphy. Dudley was a clean-cut guy that went to Yale. He didn't have a lot of success in the NBA but he stuck around for a while. One of the great moments involving Dudley was when he threw?a ball at Shaquille O'Neal.Of course, there are also young players currently?representing the state like Ryan Gomes (from Waterbury). Gomes had a lot of success in college at Providence. Another player, Tyson Wheeler (from New Britain) also had a very good college career while playing at Rhode Island. Not all of these players would be considered the best to come out of the state. However, there are enough of them to have some interesting debates and conversations. Out of these players and others who were born in the state, who had the best college career? What about the best pro career? The question of who had the best resume off the court shouldn't have to be asked. Calvin Murphy in a landslide there.

Fencing, also known as “physical chess”, is a vigorous and dynamic activity for both boys and girls, that integrates the mind and the body. Fencing is becoming more and more popular because it provides such a high degree of exercise, both physical and mental. Fencing helps a child develop maturity, a sense of timing, patience and a willingness to observe, analyze, reflect and deceive as they challenge opponents in a fencing match.Fencing clubs in Connecticut include:Hopkins Fencing Club, New Haven http://www.jukeboxalive.com/blog.php?blog_id=9415925, CTICONN Fencing Club, Middletown, CTRectory School Fencing Club, Pomfret, CTSword in the Scroll Fencing Academy, Willimantic http://www.workitmom.com/profile/micahcallese410/?info=life#scroll-profile_module, CTThames River Fencing, Old Lyme, CTFencing is an exciting activity that challenges participants physically, mentally, and emotionally. In the sport of fencing, the smarter opponent usually beats the bigger, stronger and faster opponent. Fencing requires children to “think on their feet” and make quick, good decisions. This type of thinking will translate into real-life situations and help the child with their school work. When children fence, they work very hard, but personally believe they are playing, due to the enjoyment of the sport and the “sword play” that a child experiences. Check out a local fencing club in Connecticut and let your child decide if they want to become a fencer.?Advertisement
